As a biological concept, the term adult refers to a human or animal that is a person who has grown. Adults are a social concept as well as a legal concept within the world of humans. As opposed to "minor" (or "non-adult", a legal-age adult is an individual who has achieved the age of majority. They are considered to be responsible, independent and competent. Also, they can be described as an "major". The age when a child becomes an adult legally is 18 years old, however the definition of maturity may differ based on the country or legal system as well as their psychological state.

At the point that a person reaches intellectual and physical maturity, it is referred to as adulthood. Typically, the age of adulthood is around the age of 21, or 20. The middle age begins at about 40 years old and then it is followed by an old age of about 60. The three major stages of adulthood include early adulthood (from mid-30s to late-60s), middle adulthood from mid-30s to late-60s and later adulthood, (mid-60s until death). When we enter the age of early adulthood (20 to mid-40s) our physical growth has been completed, however our height and weight may increase slightly. Physical capabilities peak in young adulthood. This includes muscle strength and reflex speed, as well as senses, and heart functioning.
